Water Recreation in WY
Summer Fishing, Boating & Hot Springs
Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area
Nothing says summer like boating, fishing, and swimming – and maybe even some natural hot springs. Get wet this summer in Wyoming in state parks, national recreation area, or anywhere else you can find H2O.
Great fly-fishing is found in central Wyoming – just head to Wind River Canyon. Located between Thermopolis and Shoshoni, Wind River trails U.S. Highway 20 and Wyoming Highway 789, and encompasses the Boysen State Park on its southern end.
Wind River Canyon is a tailwater fishery thanks to the Boysen Dam, and brown trout are aplenty. Anglers, be sure to obtain Wind River Indian Reservation fishing permit or license, and enjoy your day on the Wind River.
Set in south Wyoming on the border with Utah, the Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area offers first-class fishing and boating in the 91-mile-long Flaming Gorge Reservoir.
A quick drive southwest of Rock Springs, Flaming Gorge visitors can take out a small boat and reel in small mouth bass, rainbow trout, and brown trout. While on the reservoir, take advantage of water sports like waterskiing, jet skiing, and wake boarding – or take the speedboat for a spin.
Other activities include swimming, scuba diving, and simply relaxing on the shores of the Flaming Gorge.
But don’t go too far – Hot Springs State Park is located right in Thermopolis. More than 8,000 gallons 135-degree water washes over Hot Springs Park terrace daily, making for some incredible hot springs. Visit the State Bath House from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., or take advantage of fishing and picnic shelters at Wyoming’s first state park.
