WY Summer Biking & Riding
Horse & Bike Trails in the Cowboy State
Grand Teton National Park
Looking to sit on your rear this summer? Then visit Wyoming for some of the best mountain biking and horseback riding in the country. Hundreds of miles of trail lead through Wyoming national parks, forests, and recreation areas, so let’s hit the saddle.
Northwestern Wyoming is home to the Grand Teton National Park – only the second most famous national park in the state. Surrounded by Wyoming towns like Jackson and Cody, the Grand Teton National Park offers road and mountain biking on paved road and multi-use trails.
Bike paths lead from Dornans in Moose to South Jenny Lake, Jackson to Moose Junction, Jackson to Gros Ventre Junction, and more – and watch out for elk.
For horseback riding in the Grand Tetons, contact one of these park-authorized businesses: Headwaters Lodge at Flagg Ranch, Grand Teton Lodge Company, or Lost Creek Ranch.
Biking and horseback riding are also found at the Bighorn National Forest in northern Wyoming. Set west of Wyoming cities like Sheridan and Buffalo, Bighorn National Forest is a 1.1-million-acre playground encompassing 1,500 miles of trail.
Bike paths include Bonanza Lookout Trail and Taylor Graves Trail near Sheridan, plus Swamp Trail and Grouse Mountain Trail near Buffalo. Dozens of horseback riding areas and trails course through Bighorn National Forest as well, including Martini Loop Trail, Granger Cutoff Trail, and the Sawmill Trail.
For a quick mountain biking adventure, head to southeast Wyoming for the Happy Jack Recreation Area – just east of Laramie. Happy Jack features about 30 miles of trail spread over roughly 10 trails. The HJRA is located in the Medicine Bow National Forest, which means cyclists are rewarded with scenic outlooks and wildlife viewing.
