WY Hiking & Rock Climbing

Summer Hiking & Climbing in the Cowboy State

Devils Tower National Monument

Devils Tower National Monument

You can’t beat summer hiking and rock climbing in Wyoming's national parks and monuments.

Wyoming – and parts of Montana and Idaho – is home to the famed Yellowstone National Park. For outdoor enthusiasts, the hiking possibilities seem endless in northwestern Wyoming.

Trails surround attractions like Old Faithful, including the one-mile hike to Observation Point, the seven-mile Mallard Lake Trail, and the 13-mile Fairy Creek Trail.

The Old Faithful area is just a day trip away from Wyoming cities like Jackson and Cody – so take advantage during your time in Yellowstone country.

For more information Wyoming’s trails – found across 18 million acres of land operated by the Bureau of Land Management – visit the Historic Trails Interpretive Center. Set in Casper in central Wyoming, the HTIC features information on famed trails such as the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail – passing through Yellowstone – and the famed Oregon Trail.

Looking to intensify your outdoor adventures this summer? Visit northeastern Wyoming for rock climbing at the legendary Devils Tower National Monument. An hour’s drive northeast from Gillette; Devils Tower is located in the Wyoming Black Hills, just north of the Belle Fourche River. This 1,267-foot structure has a top elevation of 5,112 feet, and sits within a 1,347-acre area welcoming 400,000 visitors each year.

Hiking is available at Devils Tower along the 1.3-mile Tower Trail, but the real star of the show is Durrance Route – first established in 1938 and the most popular route at Devils Tower. Other climbing routes include Weissner Route, Gimme Shelter, and Lovely Liana. Climbers need register with a park ranger before and after climbs during the summer months, or at a self-registering kiosk in the winter.
