Visiting Wyoming

Wyoming is the least populated state in the United States, however, it is in the top ten largest states by land area. There is lots of room to explore! Yellowstone, the worlds first National Park, is located in Wyoming's northwest corner and alone is worth a trip to the state. Wyoming is dominated in the west by mountain ranges and high plains to in the east, providing a dramatic variety of recreation and outdoor activities. Cheyenne, the capital is located in the southeast corner of the state.

Yellowstone, a showcase of nature and wildlife, continues to be one of the most popular family vacation destinations. Winter and spring tours are available in snow coaches and snowmobiles, giving a unique and dramatic look at the animals and sights. With a blanket of snow, bison, elk and other wildlife stand out in stark contrast, and move slowly to conserve their energy. For the more adventurous, snowshoeing and cross country skiing provide an intimate and quiet winter experience.

Jackson, south of Yellowstone, is called Jackson Hole because it sits in a valley surrounded by mountains. Jackson has the state's largest airport, and is home to incredible winter and spring recreation, including world class mountain resorts including Grand Targhee, Snow King and Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. Try a sled dog tour or winter safari to get far off the beaten path and get close to the wildlife.

The last weekend in March, the Jackson area hosts a variety of fun activities. The 35th Annual World Championship snowmobile Hill Climb will be held at the Snow King Resort. Come watch as snowmobilers attempt to race up 1,500 vertical feet. Teton Village hosts the 5th Annual Jackson Hole Mountain Festival and Grand Teton Music Festival Winter Concerts. The Jackson Hole Ski and Snowboard Clubs 34th Annual Pole, Pedal, Paddle event marks the end of skiing with a four event race competition with alpine and cross country skiing, biking and boating. Amazing fun, even if you don't compete.

Thermopolis sounds like a city from the superhero comics, and in winter looks even more the part. Situated in central Wyoming, the world's largest mineral hot springs are located here. A thick cloud of steam envelops the pools which draw visitors to enjoy a variety of soaking options. Never mind if it snows, the water flows into the pools at 127 degrees, you will be plenty warm regardless of the air temperature.

Devils Tower may not sound familiar, but is widely recognized from the movie Close Encounters of the Third Kind. In northeast Wyoming between Sundance and Hulett, it is a dramatic sight to come upon. A 1200 foot monolith rises abruptly from it's surroundings – an obvious choice for an otherworldly movie location.
