Visiting Wyoming

Even through the winter, the Cowboy State continues to be a playground ripe with opportunities for adventure. Destinations like Bear River State Park and Grand Teton National Park are as scenic as ever and cold-weather outdoor fun abounds. What’s more, visitors are invited to join in with communities from Sheridan to Cheyenne to Evanston to celebrate the season through a variety of special events, festivals, and family-friendly activities.

Riverton’s 30th Wild West Winter Carnival is a month-long celebration in Riverton, south of Thermopolis. From January 15th through February 15th, venues all around town play host to a variety of ways to embrace the cold. Don’t miss highlights like the Snowman Race, Night Parade, Car & Bike Show, and the Finale Carnival Gala.

Saratoga makes an easy day trip destination for visitors to Rawlins and Laramie, and this season, there’s much to see and do. Visit Saratoga in mid-January for their annual Ice Fishing Derby, January 16th and 17th, and test your skills for the chance at a $20,000 cash prize.

The very next weekend, snowmobilers speed to Saratoga to be a part of the 2016 Snowy Range Poker Run. Riders race along a course traversing the scenic Slow Range high country, competing for a grand prize of $1,000. The all day fun culminates in finish line festivities with cold beer provided by the local Snowy Mountain Brewery.

Athletes over the age of 50 travel from Gillette, Pinedale, and beyond to participate in the 2016 Wyoming Senior Olympics Winter Games in Cody. From February 18th through 21st, seniors will compete in everything from Nordic skiing and snowshoeing to racquetball and more.

As the snow melts and winter turns to spring, the action is heating up inside the Platte Valley Community Center in Saratoga. The 2016 Wyoming Open Pool Tournament, sponsored by the Saratoga Lions Club and the Carbon County Visitors Council, brings some of the best billiards players in the world to compete. Start working on your English now – it’s not too late to register.
