Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area

Flaming Gorge

Flaming Gorge NRA is a Must-Visit Site in Wyoming

Southern Wyoming contains a portion of the ninety-one mile Flaming Gorge Reservoir. This beautiful reservoir is within the Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area, that spans from Southern Wyoming into Northern Utah.

The reservoir was created in 1964, when the Flaming Gorge Dam was built in the Green River. Explorer John Wesley Powell named the gorge "flaming gorge" during his expedition of the Green River in 1869, because of the gorge's rich red cliffs.

After the construction of the dam was completed in the 1960s, the National Recreation area was established. The area is managed by the Ashley National Forest.

Fishing for rainbow trout and brown trout is a popular activity in this beautiful recreation area, along with boating, hiking, and Flaming Gorge Dam tours. After a day of fun exploring the area, travel a short distance north to Rock Springs.

Rock Springs Sweetwater County Airport

Covering 1,242 acres, Rock Springs-Sweetwater County Airport (RKS) is a public airport serving the city of Rock Springs and other communities in southwestern Wyoming. Both a city and county owned airpark, RKS is a primary commercial service airport featuring two runways and one terminal.

RKS is served by two major airlines: Delta and United, both operated by SkyWest Airlines and featuring destinations like Denver, Salt Lake City, and Gillette. Established in 1942, RKS was formerly Rock Springs Airport, and was visited by Amelia Earhart.

South Pass City

Throughout Wyoming, discover a wide range of excellent sites to explore. Because of it's rich Native American history and culture, impressive list of outdoor recreations, and countless other premier attractions, Wyoming consistently proves to be an ideal destination.

One of the attractions you'll no doubt want to make time to see is South Pass City. Found just south of the Bridger National Forest, South Pass City is, today, an unincorporated community.
