Ames Monument

The Ames Monument is a Premier Attraction

At a cost of $65,000, the Ames Monument was successfully completed in 1882, serving as a monument to the Ames brothers. Oakes and Oliver Ames used their wealth and influence to help guide the completion of the first coast to coast railroad in North America.

The Union Pacific Railroad Company commissioned American architect Henry Hobson Richardson to design and build the monument.

The Ames Monument is found off of Ironhorse Road and Monument Road in rural Wyoming, nearly 20 miles southeast from nearby Laramie. The Ames Monument stands at 60 feet tall and is a monolithic pyramid.

Cheyenne Regional Airport

A joint civil-military airpark, the Cheyenne Regional Airport (CYS) serves the city of Cheyenne, and other communities in southeastern Wyoming like Laramie and Wheatland. Formerly Jerry Olson Field, CYS is a focus city for Great Lakes Airlines, and supports cargo airlines like FedEx Express, Key Lime Air, and UPS Airlines.

Covering 1,060 acres, CYS features two runways and one terminal. Established in 1911, CYS is also home to the Cheyenne Air National Guard Base, and is owned by the Cheyenne Regional Airport Board.

Happy Jack Recreation Area

Set in the Medicine Bow National Forest, the Happy Jack Recreation Area is located in southeast Wyoming – just 10 miles east of Laramie and less than an hour northwest of Cheyenne. Set off Interstate 80 and Wyoming State Route 210, HJRA features trails surrounding Pole Mountain – with a top elevation of 8,850 feet.

Laramie Jubilee Days

Called Wyoming’s Hometown Celebration, Laramie Jubilee Days is held annually in July at the Albany County Fairgrounds and downtown Laramie, Wyoming. Established in 1940, LBD features a carnival, shopping, food, and the Mr. T Bull Riding Golf Tournament.

Laramie Regional Airport

Owned by Laramie Regional Airport Board, the Laramie Regional Airport (LAR) is set in southeastern Wyoming, serving the city of Laramie. A primary commercial service airport, LAR features two runways and one terminal – built in 1959. LAR is served by United Express airlines, operated by SkyWest Airlines.

Formerly known as Brees Field, LAR was established in 1934, and covers 1,580 acres. LAR also neighbors the University of Wyoming, and the Wyoming Technical Institute. Make plans to visit Laramie soon – if you come in by air, you'll most certainly land at the Laramie Regional Airport.

Medicine Bow National Forest

Covering a total of nearly 2.9 million acres, the Medicine Bow National Forest spreads from north-central Colorado into southeastern Wyoming, near Laramie and Rawlins. With a mix of forests and wide open grasslands, Medicine Bow National Forest provides an abundance of outdoor recreation. Hiking, fishing, trails for mountain biking, and even picnic areas can be found within Medicine Bow National Forest.

University of Wyoming

Established in 1886, University of Wyoming is a public land-grant university located in Laramie, Wyoming. The flagship campus, UW features seven colleges, and offers more than 190 undergraduate, graduate, and certificate degrees.

The UW campus encompasses the American Heritage Center, a history museum featuring artifacts, documents, and the Toppan Library, and the UW Geological Museum – home to the famed “Big Al” Allosaurus exhibit.

History buffs love spending time in Southern Wyoming. Numerous historical sites are found in Laramie. The Wyoming Territorial Prison was 1872, and housed over 1,000 people. 

The prison was used from 1872 until 1903. Afterwards, the prisoners were moved to Rawlins, Wyoming. The prison, the Warden's house and Prison Industries building were used by the College of Agriculture at the University of Wyoming, as an experiment station for a number of years.

In 1989, the prison and the accompanying buildings were restored to preserve their historical value. While in Laramie, be sure to add the prison site to your list of must-see historical attractions.

The Ivinson Mansion and Grounds, the East Side School and the Fort Sanders Guardhouse, all located in Laramie, are among the twenty historical sites listed on the National Register of Historical Places.
