Carbon County Museum

Plan a visit to Wyoming and head to the southern section of the central region – there, you'll find Rawlins. A visit to Rawlins should mean some time spent at the Carbon County Museum. Opened in August of 1940 after a push from Rev. Hugh Fulton, the Carbon County Museum features nearly 30,000 items – historic artifacts, pictures, recreations, and plenty of local nostalgia. Your visit to the Carbon County Museum will yield specific insights into the early years of life in Rawlins.

Some of the permanent exhibits are built around locals of prominence. There's a spotlight on 19th century medicine, with exhibits celebrating the work of Dr. John Eugene Osborne, who was elected as the first governor of Wyoming in 1891. You'll also want to check out the exhibit on Dr. Lillian Heath, Wyoming's first female physician. There's a wealth of knowledge to glean – make your way to the Carbon County Museum soon.

Reconnect with the rich history of the Cowboy State, during your visit to south-central Wyoming. Travel south of Casper on Highway 220, to reach the Independence Rock State Historic Site

Visit this historic site to see the large granite rock outcropping among the grassy prairie. The site's namesake, Independence Rock, stands nearly 130 feet high and measures 850 feet wide by 1,900 feet long.

This massive rounded rock has been visited by travelers since the 19th century, when pioneers passed by during their journey along the Emigrant Trail

During the 19th century, thousands of pioneers traveled past Independence Rock for many decades, leaving their inscriptions on the rock.

Visit this National Historic Site to see the remaining hundreds of names inscribed in the rock, from those early days. View the interpretive signs at the site, to learn more about its rich history, as you make your way to the rock.

Scramble to the top of the rock to view more engravings and to admire the views of the vast Wyoming plains. Be sure to capture a picture of this historic site for a remembrance of your visit. 

Medicine Bow National Forest

Covering a total of nearly 2.9 million acres, the Medicine Bow National Forest spreads from north-central Colorado into southeastern Wyoming, near Laramie and Rawlins. With a mix of forests and wide open grasslands, Medicine Bow National Forest provides an abundance of outdoor recreation. Hiking, fishing, trails for mountain biking, and even picnic areas can be found within Medicine Bow National Forest.

There's an array of wilderness areas for you to explore once you've made your way to Medicine Bow National Forest. Rawlins SummerFest

Found in Carbon County, the annual Rawlins SummerFest takes place in downtown Rawlins in mid-July. The Wyoming festival includes the Rawlins Jam motorcycle event, and the Outlaw Show N' Shine car show.

Rawlins SummerFest events include outhouse races, food and shopping, and outdoor movies at Carbon County Museum. Try a night tour of Wyoming Frontier Prison, enter an ice cream eating contest, and attend the Saturday night dance and BBQ.

Seminoe State Park

A real treasure in Wyoming, the Seminoe State Park is an ideal destination for those seeking outdoor adventures. You'll want to drive in from nearby Rawlins and check out all there is to do at Seminoe State Park. You'll want to find a nice spot and fish – the waters at Seminoe State Park are fed from the connected Seminoe Reservoir. Most anglers who fish at Seminoe tend to and trout and walleye.

Spring and summer are nearly ideal for a visit to Seminoe State Park – feel free to launch your boat and tool around on the waters of the Seminoe Reservoir, enjoy one of the many picnic areas, complete with tables and designated fire pits. There are also areas perfect for taking a dip into the water and cooling off – nothing says summer like cut-offs and lake water.
